Since it became a university in 1994, City University of Hong Kong (hereinafter referred to as CityU) has always adhered to the principle of combining teaching and research, and has been committed to finding solutions to global issues and promoting beneficial social changes through innovation and expertise in research and professional education. It has also achieved excellent results in the world rankings.

In early 2020, CityU signed a cooperation agreement with the Dongguan Municipal Government and Dongguan University of Technology to establish a Mainland-Hong Kong joint educational institution with independent legal personality in Songshan Lake Science City, Dongguan City, named City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan).
